José de Ribera, also known as Jusepe de Ribera, or as "Lo Spagnoletto" was a Valencian painter based in Italy. There he developed his entire career. He contributed to forge the great Neapolitan school that later would name him as his master par excellence. By sending his works to Spain he was of great influence for Velázquez and Murillo among others.
This statue is located in front of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Valencia, on the other bank of the old Turia riverbed.
